A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Papua region in Indonesia’s far east early on Tuesday (06/12), US seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, and no tsunami alert.
The quake occurred near the southern coast of Papua at 4:28 am (1928 GMT Monday) with an epicenter 129 kilometers north of Dobo, the US Geological Survey said. It struck at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity through earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
